What Is Coaching and How Does It Work?

Coaching is a structured and future-oriented process where the client brings specific goal(s) tied to a desired outcome or future state. With the coach’s support, these goals are clarified and broken down into smaller, actionable steps. These sub-goals form the foundation of a personalized plan, where each step contributes to achieving the larger objective.

The coaching process is typically time-bound. This means that coach and client agree on the overall timeframe for the engagement and how often they will meet. The structure adds clarity, focus, and accountability.Returning to work after maternity, paternity, or extended parental leave is more than just a professional transition — it’s a shift that can come with a complex mix of emotions. I offer a supportive and empowering space for parents to navigate the return to work with clarity, and regain confidence in their professional identity.

The Role of the Coach and Key Responsibilities

The coach plays the role of an attentive and non-judgmental listener, helping the client gain clarity about their direction and goals. Rather than giving advice or steering the conversation, the coach facilitates a process of discovery by asking powerful, thought-provoking questions.

The coach’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Creating a supportive space for exploration
  • Listening actively and without judgment
  • Asking questions that unlock new perspectives and insights
  • Bringing structure and helping the client stay connected to their goals and values
  • Encouraging accountability through follow-up and reflection

Each coaching session concludes with specific action steps, as coaching is ultimately about creating meaningful change—and change happens through action.
